Evergreen ± scandent shrubs or small trees. Leaves opposite, imparipinnate. Inflorescence a short terminal raceme or panicle. Flowers bisexual, 2-lipped, zygomorphic, pentamerous, hypogynous, large, showy, orange-red. Calyx campanulate, 5-toothed. Corolla orange to scarlet, funnelform; tube narrowly +/- cylindric, curved; limb 2-lipped, upper lip 2-lobed and lower lip 3-lobed. Stamens 4, didynamous, exserted. Carpels 2, syncarpous; ovary 2-locular, ovules numerous per loculus, placentation axile. Disk cupulate. Capsule elongated, compressed. Seeds winged.

A rambling shrub up to 2.5 m tall, semierect, scandent. Shoots purple-red with lenticels, minutely pubescent. Leaves opposite, 11-13 cm x 5-6 cm, unipinnately imparipinnate, leaf base pulvinate, rachis and petiole distinctly winged, puberulent; leaflets 5-13, sessile or subsessile, elliptic-ovate; lateral leaflets 17-33 mm x 12-14 mm, margin serrate except basal part, apex acute or obtuse, base cuneate or rounded; terminal leaflet larger, 28-40 mm x (14)20-30 mm, acuminate; all leaflets glabrous adaxially, abaxially tomentose especially on nerves. Inflorescence simple raceme or panicles of racemes, terminal or axillary. Flowers ca. 5.5 cm long and 3-3.5 cm across, bisexual, zygomorphic, hypogynous, orange-red. Calyx cupulate, 5-6 mm long, teeth 5, ca. 1 mm long, broadly triangular, mucronate, puberulent, persistent. Corolla ca. 5.5 cm long, funnelform, orange-red with longitudinal dark streaks adaxially; tube 3.5-4.5 m long, curved, narrow cylindrical at base, 2-3 mm wide, flare upwards becoming 1-1.2 cm wide at throat, pubescent within (near the base), base glandular; limb 2-lipped, oblique: lower lip of 3 lobes, lobes 10-15 mm x 8-10 mm, reflexed; upper lip of 2 lobes, lobes 8-10 mm x 8-10 mm, straight. Stamens 4, conspicuously exserted, inserted at the basal part of tube, didynamous, larger stamens with ca. 4 cm long filaments, smaller stamens with ca. 3.5 cm long filaments, filaments glandular hairy at base; anthers bithecous, thecae 3 mm long, divaricate; staminode 1; occasionally all 5 stamens fertile or 5 fertile stamens and 1 staminode or only 4 fertile stamens. Carpels 2, syncarpous; ovary 2-locular, many ovules per loculus in 2 series on each placenta, placentation axile; style ca. 5 cm long, red, exserted; stigma bifid, lobes flattened, ovate, 1 mm long. Disc reddish-brown, cupulate, ca. 3 mm long, obscurely 5-lobed.
